The ADA Turns 36. Are Your Room ID Signs Actually Compliant?

On July 26, 2026, it marked 36 years since President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. For anyone working in facilities management, compliance, or building signage, the anniversary is worth stopping to think about, because room ID signs were addressed directly in the original law, and they're still among the most frequently miscounted, misread, and misinstalled signs in buildings across the country.

That's not a small oversight. Every school, hospital, hotel, office, and apartment complex in the U.S. has doors, and most of those doors need compliant signs. Somewhere along those 36 years, a lot of facility managers got the wrong information, bought signs from the wrong vendors, or inherited non-compliant signs from previous building owners and assumed they were fine.

The ADA Had Room ID Signs Figured Out in 1990. Buildings Are Still Catching Up.

The ADA didn't leave the room signage question vague. From the beginning, the law specified that braille room signs must use Grade 2 Braille, not letter-by-letter Grade 1. Tactile room signs must include raised characters at a specified height. The law requires accessible signage at 48 to 60 inches above the finished floor, measured to the baseline of the tactile characters, on the latch side of the door. Restroom signs, office room signs, stairwell signs, elevator signs, and window signs marking permanent spaces all fell under those requirements from day one.

The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design tightened some specifics, but the core requirements for room ID signs stayed consistent: raised characters, Grade 2 Braille, correct mounting, and sufficient contrast. High contrast. Raised characters. Proper placement. These aren't complicated standards, and they've been in writing for over three decades. The gap between the law and what's actually in buildings isn't a knowledge problem, mostly. It's a purchasing problem.

Room ID Signs May Look Compliant Until You Actually Read the Braille

Walk through a modern office building or hotel and you'll likely find what looks like a complete set of ADA compliant signs beside every door. Raised letters. Braille beneath the text. Professional-looking custom room plaques. To anyone who isn't looking closely, the building appears fully covered.

The problem tends to be invisible until someone actually tries to read the Braille.

A large percentage of braille room signs sold online use Grade 1 Braille rather than the required Grade 2 (contracted) Braille. Grade 2 uses a standardized set of contractions that literate Braille readers rely on every day. Grade 1 spells things out letter by letter. The ADA requires Grade 2, and purchasing a sign that doesn't meet that standard means the sign isn't compliant regardless of how it looks. A blind person moving through a building and using those room ID signs shouldn't have to work through incorrect or unfamiliar Braille just to find a restroom or a conference room.

Mounting errors are just as common. Forty percent of ADA signage violations found during facility inspections involve incorrect height or placement. A sign installed at 44 inches instead of 48 fails. A sign on the wrong side of the door fails. The standards define exactly where room ID signs go, and being off by a few inches means the sign doesn't serve the people it's supposed to serve.

The violations don't stop at office room signs. Classroom number signs, apartment number signs, elevator signs, and stairwell signs fall under the same requirements, and the mistakes show up just as often. A school building might have compliant classroom signs and non-compliant stairwell signs because someone ordered the stairwell signs from a different vendor, or replaced them during a renovation without checking whether the new signs met the standard.

Wayfinding signs in hallways get even less attention. If the room ID signs at each door are right but the directional signage leading to those rooms isn't accessible, the whole system still fails a person with a visual impairment.

Getting Room ID Signs Right in 2026: What It Actually Takes

Compliance is the baseline, but the facilities doing this well in 2026 aren't treating room ID signs as a box to check. They're treating the sign package as something that should actually work for the people moving through the building.

That means sourcing tactile room signs and custom room plaques from vendors who verify the Braille translation before production, not just print dots on a substrate and call it done. Grade 2 Braille uses specific contractions for common words, and manufacturers who skip a trained Braille proofreader are relying on automated translations that sometimes introduce errors. A well-designed sign meets the ADA requirements and makes the space easier to use for everyone in it.

The facilities getting this right are auditing their whole sign package at once: room ID signs, restroom signs, elevator signs, stairwell signs, apartment number signs, classroom number signs, wayfinding signs, and anything else that identifies a permanent space.
