Is Braille Used in Elevators? A Complete Guide to Elevator Braille Signs

If you have ever ridden an elevator in a public building and noticed the small raised dots next to each floor button, you have already answered part of the question: yes, braille is used in elevators, and it is required by federal law in the United States. This guide walks through where braille appears in an elevator, what the ADA actually requires, and how building owners, contractors, and facility managers can stay compliant.

Why Braille Belongs in Every Elevator

Elevators are one of the most challenging environments for a person who is blind or has low vision. You cannot see which floor button you are pressing, you cannot read the floor number on the door jamb when the car stops, and you have no visual reference for which side of the lobby to exit. Tactile characters and braille solve all three problems.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed in 1990 and updated in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, treats elevators as a public accommodation. That means commercial buildings, hospitals, hotels, schools, government facilities, and most multi-family housing complexes with elevators are legally required to install braille and tactile signage that meets a very specific set of rules.

Skipping these signs, or installing them incorrectly, opens a building up to formal ADA complaints, civil lawsuits, and failed accessibility inspections. More importantly, it leaves visually impaired occupants without the information they need to move safely through the building.

The Three Places Braille Appears in an Elevator

There are three distinct locations where braille is required in and around an elevator. Each one has its own set of standards.

  1. Hoistway (Door Jamb) Floor Designation Signs

These are the signs mounted on both sides of the elevator opening on every floor. Their job is to tell a passenger which floor the car has arrived on before they step off.

Under section 407.2.3 of the 2010 ADA Standards, floor designations must be provided on both jambs of the hoistway entrance, in both raised tactile characters and Grade 2 braille. The raised numerals must be a minimum of 2 inches tall, and a tactile star must appear on both jambs at the main entry level of the building, with the braille reading "Main."

Mounting height matters as well: the baseline of the raised characters is required to sit 60 inches above the finished floor, which puts the sign at a natural hand-height for a reader running their fingers along the door frame.

  1. Elevator Car Control Buttons

Inside the elevator car, every control button needs to be identified. This includes floor selection buttons, the door open and door close buttons, the alarm, and the emergency phone or communication button.

The raised character or symbol on each button must be between 5/8 inch and 2 inches tall, and each button must be accompanied by Grade 2 braille. Per the ADA, braille on car controls is allowed to appear either directly below or immediately adjacent to the corresponding raised character, with a minimum separation of 3/16 inch. This exception exists because there simply is not room on a standard elevator panel to follow the general rule of placing braille below the tactile line.

  1. Directional and Informational Signage

Beyond the required floor and button markings, ADA rules also cover signs that direct people to accessible elevators, identify areas of refuge near elevator lobbies, and provide emergency instructions. If an elevator is not accessible, directional signage with braille must point the way to the nearest accessible one.

Braille Type and Formatting Standards

Not all braille is created equal, and the ADA is specific about the type it will accept.

  • Grade 2 (contracted) braille is required, not Grade 1. Grade 2 uses contractions for common letter groups and whole words, and it is the standard most braille readers actually read.
  • Domed or rounded dots are required. Flat or square dots are non-compliant because they are harder to read by touch.
  • Dot spacing must follow the specifications in section 703.3 of the ADA Standards, which cover dot base diameter, dot height, and the distance between dots within a cell and between cells.
  • Braille is always positioned below the corresponding tactile text, with the exception noted above for elevator car controls.

Getting the translation right is just as important as getting the physical dots right. A misspelled or mistranslated braille floor label is not compliant, even if every other spec is met. Additional ADA Elevator Requirements Worth Knowing

While braille is the focus of this guide, elevator accessibility involves several related standards that often come up on the same project:

  • Elevator doors must remain fully open for a minimum of 3 seconds, and reopen automatically if obstructed.
  • Both audible and visual signals are required to indicate floor arrival and direction of travel.
  • Floor designation signs should use a sans-serif font with high color contrast between the character and its background, typically light characters on a dark background or vice versa, with a non-glare finish.
  • A minimum separation of 3/8 inch is required between the floor number, the braille, and any raised borders or other tactile elements on the sign.

Common Compliance Mistakes to Avoid

In our experience producing elevator signage, the same handful of mistakes come up over and over:

  1. Using Grade 1 braille instead of Grade 2. Non-compliant, even if every dot is perfect.
  2. Flat or engraved dots instead of raised, rounded domes.
  3. Skipping the tactile star at the main entry level, or placing it on only one jamb.
  4. Mounting the sign at the wrong height, usually too low, next to the call button rather than at 60 inches on the jamb.
  5. Missing a floor in a multi-elevator bank, so one shaft is compliant and another is not.
  6. Glossy finishes that create glare and violate the non-glare requirement.
