Before the ADA, Braille Exit Signs Didn't Have to Exist. Here's What Changed.
Most people walk past a tactile sign and don't give it a second thought. The raised letters, the row of dots underneath, it reads like one piece doing one job. Braille exit signs are actually doing two separate jobs at once, and understanding why that matters starts with a law passed in 1990 that redefined what buildings owe the people who use them.
How the ADA Made Braille Exit Signs a Federal Standard
Before 1990, accessibility requirements for signage in the United States were inconsistent at best. Some states had their own codes with varying levels of detail. Many buildings had nothing resembling a tactile wayfinding system. The Americans with Disabilities Act set a federal baseline that applied across virtually every public and commercial space in the country, and the 1991 ADA Standards for Accessible Design put teeth to that requirement by spelling out exactly what accessible signage had to include.
Braille exit signs didn't exist as a uniform national requirement before that. After the ADA, they did. The 2010 revision to the ADA Standards tightened those specifications further, covering character height, Braille grade (Grade 2 contracted Braille is required), mounting height (60 inches to the centerline of the text), placement on the latch side of the door, and finish requirements for durability.
The scope of that change is still working its way through existing building stock. ADA compliant signage is required in hospitals, hotels, schools, government facilities, office buildings, and retail spaces. Every renovation, every new build, every change of occupancy triggers a fresh look at whether the signs meet current ADA sign requirements. Buildings constructed before 1991 aren't automatically exempt once modifications begin, and that catches a lot of property owners off guard.
Why Braille Exit Signs Have Both Dots and Raised Letters
Here's where most people have a gap in their understanding. The common assumption is that Braille is just a dot-translation of the raised print letters next to it, so having both seems redundant. It isn't.
Raised letters and Braille address different populations with different reading methods. Tactile characters, which is what the ADA calls them, are read by people who have low vision or who lost their sight later in life and never learned Braille. Running a finger across the word "EXIT" in raised letters gives them direct access to that word. Braille exit signs carry both formats because Braille, a coded system of dot cells representing letters, numbers, and contractions, serves people who learned it fluently and read it much faster than they'd read raised print. Neither format alone covers everyone who needs tactile access to that information.
The construction of those signs matters as much as the content. ADA compliant exit signs need non-glare surfaces, characters raised between 1/32" and 1/2" above the background, and specific spacing between letters and Braille cells.
When Tactile Signs Are the Only Signs That Work
The lifesaving role of tactile signs is most visible when everything else fails. Fires cut power. Smoke fills corridors. People panic. The overhead illuminated sign, the green arrow, the glow-in-the-dark floor strip: none of it reaches someone who can't see. A person with a visual impairment reaches for the wall, finds the sign, and reads it with their hands.
Accessible exit routes depend on that information being there and being accurate. Approximately 7.6 million Americans live with some form of visual disability, and emergency egress signs that include both raised text and Braille give those individuals an independent path to safety. They don't have to wait for someone to guide them out. In a building evacuation, that independence matters in a way that's hard to overstate.
Visual impairment safety in emergency planning isn't a niche concern. It's built into why building codes and fire safety standards have evolved to require tactile information alongside every other form of wayfinding. Every major revision to the ADA Standards has reinforced this, not walked it back. The people who need these signs the most are often the hardest to reach by other means.
Are Your Braille Exit Signs Actually Compliant?

The mounting location is regulated. What a tactile exit sign must say versus what a room identification sign must say is regulated. Improving accessibility in modern buildings requires more than a quick visual check. A sign can look correct and still be wrong: mounted at the wrong height, placed on the wrong side of the door, or produced with a Braille grade that doesn't meet ADA compliant signage standards.
